ZTE Signs WiMAX Deal with Libya Telecom & Technology

Chinese telecommunications equipment provider ZTE announced in early January 2008 that the company has signed a deal with LTT (Libya Telecom & Technology) to build a large-scale commercial WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) network in Libya, according to XFN-ASIA.
Reported to be the first commercial WiMAX network in Africa, the LTT-ZTE project is expected to cover eight major Libya cities - including the capital Tripoli - providing WiMAX access to approximately 300,000 subscribers in the initial phase. The network is slated for completion by the third quarter of 2008.
According to the contract, ZTE will provide various distributed and end-to-end IP WiMAX product solutions, including compact and high-capacity base stations, access gateway, network management system, MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), and IMS (IP Multimedia System). Financial details of this deal were not disclosed, though.
